Clinton Gahwiler - Synopsis of applied work

Qualifications: BA Hons MA (Couns. Psych.) - University of Cape Town

Since 1995, Clinton Gahwiler has run the psychology practice of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) in Newlands, Cape Town. His main interests lie in the related fields of sport and health psychology. Clinton’s passion is helping clients to develop, implement and maintain strategies which optimize performance and well-being on a sustainable basis.

A: Sport psychology

Since 1994, extensive work with individual athletes and teams. Confidentiality precludes the mentioning of most clients. Interventions / positions which are however of common knowledge include:

  • Consultant to South African national teams of various sporting codes, both in private capacity and through SSISA’s High Performance Centre, 1995 – present
  • Psychologist to overall Team South Africa at the Athens Olympics, 2004.
  • Psychologist to overall Team South Africa at the 7th All Africa Games, 1999.
  • Psychology consultant to NOCSA’s Operation Excellence athletes in build-up to Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
  • Psychologist to PSL team Santos FC, 2009 - present.
  • Psychologist to Canoeing South Africa, 2009 - present.
  • Three years traveling experience with the SA men’s hockey team, 1997 – 2000.
  • Psychologist to International Cricket Council’s High Performance support team, 2003. (Including work with national squads of Holland, Canada & Namibia, and coaching staff in Pakistan).
  • Psychology consultant to the Macsteel “Maestro’s of the future” lifeskills programme, (for previously disadvantaged athletes), 2000 - present.
  • Psychologist on United Cricket Board of South Africa’s medical committee, 2003 – 2004.
  • Psychologist on NOCSA Medical Commission (2000 – 2004).
  • Guest lecturer in various UCT academic departments, including Physiotherapy, Sports Science, Organizational psychology and Dietetics.
  • National sport psychology examiner for Intec (International Colleges Group), 1998 – present.
  • Sport psychology representative on South African Sports Medicine Association committee (Western Cape), 1997 - 1999.
  • Member of the Sports Information and Science Agency’s national sport psychology committee, 1999 – 2003.
  • Sport psychology practicum (Sport psychology department of the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra), 1994

In his private practice at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA), 1995 – present, work with many other private individuals and teams seeking psychological services, from a wide range of sports, 1994 – present.

B: Health Psychology

Since 1995, Clinton has worked with many normal individuals, in helping them to make positive changes to their health and wellbeing, in a way that they are able to maintain over the longer-term. This has seen him consulting, training, and supporting in amongst others, various stress management programmes, healthy weight programmes and cardiac rehabilitation programmes.

He also regularly contributes to various magazines and publications

C: Other applications

Clinton has a special interest in applying sport psychology principles in other areas of human performance, including the business world and the performing arts. He has worked with people in these and other fields to help them overcome mental blocks and to maximize their potential.

As guitarist and song-writer for well-known SA band “Flat Stanley”, he has recently had to apply both his sports expertise (overcoming mental barriers, coping with performance nerves etc) and his health psychology knowledge (balancing family, work & music) in his own life.
